Darren Kitchen is a self taught hacker in the old-school sense. Moving
about "scenes" with a trusty 1200 baud modem, the kid cyberpunk found
passion in journalism and videography. From phreak e-zines and short
films in the 90's to Systems Administration today, Darren now Hosts
and Produces the Internet Television show HAK.5.
My passion for video and technology developed early on in my life. I started out doing video when I was about 9 years old shooting stop motion movies with Lego and a VHS camcorder. Soon after I begged my parents for a computer and got an IBM PC-XT used. The machine was loaded with nothing more than DOS and a few utilities which led me to programming QBasic and dialing up BBS’s on my 1200 baud modem.
After many years and upgrades later I started programming in my favorite language, PHP, and filming shorts with friends on my VHS-C camcorder. Around that time I met Wess and this project began. Unfortunately at the time what we wanted to do was completely infeasible without big media budget so the idea was shelved for a few more years while I focused on networking. After landing a job in systems administration right out of high school my focus shifted back to photography and video.
