Getting Started with Hakhouse IRC
From Hak5
You can join in on the fun of Hak5 24/7 at irc.hak5.org or irc.revision3.com, if you're new to IRC however this may seem daunting. First you need an IRC client:
- To get started quickly we recommend, Mibbit at hakhouse, an online IRC client.
- However it's usually recommended to download a client.
- Mirc for Windows
- XChat (free) For windows
- XChat for Windows/Linux
- Irssi for Linux/*bsd (Windows)
- Colloquy for OS X
Once you've got a client you need to connect to the server. Most clients will ask you for the following info prior to connecting.
- Server: irc.revision3.com
- Port: 6667 NB: to connect via SSL use port: 8067
- Channels: #hakhouse
- Nick: Here put a nickname that you want to be none as in the chat room.
Anything else isn't required and you can ignore. Once you connect you'll be thrown straight into #hakhouse and can instantly start talking to people. It is recommended that you register your nickname with nickserv so no one can steal your nick or impersonate you. To do this:
- Type /msg nickserv register <password> <email-address>
- Make sure there's no space before the /. Otherwise everyone will see your password.
After registering your nick you need to identify whenever you connect. Most clients provide a password option, to identify just fill in this option with the password you told nickserv. Or you can do it manually:
- Type /msg nickserv identify <password>
[edit] FAQ
How do I make a message appear like
* nick eats breakfast
This is called an action and is used to say something in the third person. nick did this by typing:
/me eats breakfast
What do the little coloured dots/symbols beside people's names mean?
- ~ Owner, The owner is the person who owns the channel.
- & Admin, Admins are protected from being kicked by ops or halfops.
- @ Op, An op helps run the channel and can kick and ban people from the channel. So be nice to them!
- % Halfop, An halfop also helps run the channel but can't kick people with full ops.
- + Voice, Sometimes the channel gets out of control and an Op will temporarily mute the channel, people with voice (and ops) can still talk.
So, how do I get one of these? The short answer is you don't get status, but you do get voiced on join when you are identified. Most of the current ops have been members of the Hak5 community for many years or been selected by hak5darren. Asking for a role won't help, if you're going to get one, we'll come to you :-).
