Getting Started with IRC
From Hak5
You can join in on the fun of Hak5 24/7 at irc.hak5.org, if you're new to IRC however this may seem daunting. First you need an IRC client:
- To get started quickly we recommend, Mibbit, an online IRC client.
- However it's usually recommended to download a client.
Once you've got a client you need to connect to the server. Most clients will ask you for the following info prior to connecting.
- Server: irc.hak5.org
- Port: 6667
- Channels: #hak5
- Nick: Here put a nickname that you want to be none as in the chat room.
Anything else isn't required and you can ignore. Once you connect you'll be thrown straight into #hak5 and can instantly start talking to people. It is recommended that you register your nickname with nickserv so no one can steal your nick or impersonate you. To do this:
- Type /msg nickserv register <password> <email-address>
- Make sure there's no space before the /. Otherwise everyone will see your password.
After registering your nick you need to identify whenever you connect. Most clients provide a password option, to identify just fill in this option with the password you told nickserv. Or you can do it manually:
- Type /msg nickserv identify <password>
[edit] FAQ
How do I make a message appear like
* Moonlit eats breakfast
This is called an action and is used to say something in the third person. Moonlit did this by typing:
/me eats breakfast
What do the little coloured dots/symbols beside people's names mean?
- ~ - Purple Owner, The owner is the person who owns the channel.
- & - Red Admin, Admins are protected from being kicked by ops or halfops.
- @ - Green Op, An op helps run the channel and can kick and ban people from the channel. So be nice to them!
- % - Blue Halfop, An halfop also helps run the channel but can't kick people with full ops.
- + - Yellow Voice, Sometimes the channel gets out of control and an Op will temporarily mute the channel, people with voice (and ops) can still talk. Although Voice is more just to show that someone is important.
So, how do I get one of these? The short answer is you don't. Most of the current ops and voice-ees have been members of the Hak5 community for many years. Asking for a role won't help, if you're going to get one, we'll come to you :-).
