[edit] Details

HackPack 08/ 2.0 - The second (unofficial) Hak5 EU meet up, arranged by the community, has generated a lot of interest. This page will track the current plans as we finalise the details of the meet.

The meetup will be in Berlin, Germany and will be held from the 11th September to the 14th of September. Accommodation has yet to be arranged, if you wish to arrange your own then please feel free. You do not have to accompany the main party to be involved in the meetup and you may attend for either the full meetup or just the times you can make it, it’s entirely your choice.

Travel to Berlin is each individual’s responsibility to arrange. If you wish to group together to travel, that’s all good, but you’ll need to arrange it yourself. General stuff like food, drink, travel and potential events (museum visits, for example) within Berlin will also be your responsibility but it shouldn’t cost a whole lot, so don’t worry too much about that. Just be a little sensible while budgeting and all should be well.

For more information read on.

[edit] Where to Find More Info

Forum Threads Planning of the event is taking place in various forum threads while we thrash out the decisions between ourselves. This wiki page summarises the latest of those.

[edit] Date

11-14 September, Berlin, Germany

The events/meet up, starts on a Thursday and ends on a Sunday.

[edit] Location

From the original forum thread it has been decided that it will be held in Berlin. The best plan is probably to have a hostel that we can use as our "base of operations", from where we can sit around geeking out, or go around Berlin, to a bar, etc.

As of 11/06/08 (06/11/08 for Americans) it looks like the hostel will be the eastseven Hostel, which is located at Schwedter Straße 7 10119, Germany (map)

A deadline to say you want to come has been set as the 15th of July.

Untill then we can decide what exactly we are planning to do etc. so that other people who are still hesitating to come can see what we are up to. Also, please register your name at the bottem of the page.

[edit] Beverage

Buy while you are there. Expect a communal approach to them. It's a party, that's how it goes (even for geeks).

[edit] Food

This will be sorted out while we're there. Essentially, we'll eat out, or buy something to cook up at the hostel. We'll have a relaxed attitude. If you have BIG dietary requirements let us know. If you have simple dietary requirements, just try not to order something that causes you to die. I'm sure you'll manage, you managed up to now ;)

[edit] Activities

Primarily, this is a meet, a geek out, a party etc. But lets think of cool stuff to do while we're there! We don't need a lot of structure, just ideas to get things moving right away :)

Things already semi-organised:

  • Hunting for wifi/bluetooth/infrared/rfid/random street tech
  • German Museum of Technology (Messing with old computers)
  • messin' with phones
  • messin' with radios
  • making convoluted and unnecessary networks
  • going to some bars (recommendation: c-base, an underground space station driven by the CCC)
  • seeing the sights (reichstag/bundestag, brandenburger tor, alexanderplatz, the berlin wall)
  • messin' with stuff in the street.
  • mixing cocktails

Other random ideas and inspiration:

  • Museums
  • lan party
  • gaming
  • bringing cool equipment to pimp
  • making fun lil hack challenges on a laptop or AP
  • best social engineering stunt
  • CTF Wargame (no aimbots or speedhackz allowed)
  • Wall of Sheep

Really, knock yourself out. You have an idea, you go for it. Everyone can please themselves if they wanna get involved. This thing is fairly unstructured and fluid. Let the Technolust run wild!

[edit] Plans

(Still under talks) You can choose to partake in anything you want, if you come up with ideas, just add them to the list and if people want to do them it will happen.

Thursday

Last time people that arrived went to a bar near the hostel for something to eat and drink, that allowed everyone to find each other. (people that are coming may want to exchange phone numbers). It worked fairly well and it allows everyone to have a look around the area, relax and talk, after all besides a few of us, we have never met and the ones that have only met the once, gel a bit as they say.

I think the best bet for the Thursday will be just gelling (for lack of a better word) and playing with some of the equipment people bring along, that way the rest of the time will go smoothly as we will know each other a little better.

  • Airport hacking
  • Hunting for wifi/bluetooth/infrared/rfid/random street tech
  • messin' with phones
  • messin' with radios
  • making convoluted and unnecessary networks
  • going to some bars
  • messin' with stuff in the street.
  • mixing cocktails
  • Social engineering
  • Having a look around the city at night.
  • Gaming may happen if enough people have the same game or can get their hands on it.
  • Geocaching if people are up for it.

Friday

  • German Museum of Technology (Messing with old computers)
  • Hunting for wifi/bluetooth/infrared/rfid/random street tech
  • messin' with phones
  • messin' with radios
  • going to some bars (recommendation: c-base, an underground space station driven by the CCC)
  • messin' with stuff in the street.
  • mixing cocktails
  • Social engineering

Saturday

  • seeing the sights (reichstag/bundestag, brandenburger tor, alexanderplatz, the berlin wall)
  • going to some bars
  • messin' with stuff in the street.
  • mixing cocktails
  • Social engineering

Sunday

  • Goodbyes and more ideas to come.
  • Airport hacking
  • Social engineering

[edit] Stuff To Bring

This is an event which will involves being out and about, seeing the city and hacking/ playing with things when we are out and about. Keep in mind whatever you bring you may have to carry with you, although you could leave stuff at the hostel which we did last year, there is an element of risk when doing that, so I would recommend traveling fairly lite.

Things you should take, if you have them;

  • Laptop
  • Wireless card (high power)
  • Omni direction antenna
  • Directional antenna (patch antennas or biquad are small)
  • Universal adapter with 3 Pin UK into 2 Pin Plug (if your from the UK)
  • Four socket surge protector/ extension cord
  • Bluetooth dongle
  • Infrared dongle
  • Extra batteries
  • USB to RS232 interface adapter

Ideally in a backpack of some kind as they are more comfortable.

Of course if your not from Germany you will need your passport as wells as the usual things, such as a clothes (this is not a fashion show you don't need a lot), toiletries and money. Your need photo ID for the hostel even if your German so keep that in mind, if you have your passport with you that is all you need.

Its a geek meet so bring all your fun gadgets! You are responsible for them, take precautions, Berlin is a big city and even a state.

We suggest you wipe all personal data from your laptops, we're not gonna tolerate screwing with peoples stuff unless permission is given, but this is a hackerish meet up, be sensable!

Useful things:

  • Lots of network cables, crossover AND standard ethernet!
  • Routers, wifi routers, etc.
  • Radio scanner/ transceivers
  • Cameras
  • USB hubs would be useful
  • USB Nics
  • Cool projects, gadgets, wargames, software, ...
  • USB Nics, damn useful things
  • Spare cables of all kinds
  • PDA
  • GPS dongle/ device

At the end of the day take as much or as little as you want. If you want to come with nothing but the clothes on your back than that is okay. I will say that a laptop is probably the only thing that is really needed but if you don't have one it's not an issue.
