General Information

What is Hak.5 Radio?

Hak.5 Radio is a 100% community based radio station for everyone. This meaning that anyone can stream at any moment using our server.

What do you mean by "community based"?

Community based radio means that anyone is free to connect to the Hak.5 Radio server and stream any kind of content they wish, be it music, podcasts, talk shows, or even live radio!

How can I request songs?

Please go to the IRC channel and do requests there. The web-based request system is currently unavailable until new website is up and running. If you're having issues or have doubts, please see the FAQ below.

Frequently Asked Questions for Listeners

Where do I connect to listen?

Using your preferred audio playing application (such as VLC, WinAmp, etc), connect to http://hak5radio.com:8000/listen.mp3.m3u.

Why is there nothing on? I just hear repeated music!

Hak.5 Radio is a community based radio station, which means that it is only active while someone is streaming content. You may stream your own content or you may try to tune in later once the stream is active. While the stream is inactive, "Hak.5 Groove" is looped in the stream.

Why does it say "Service Unavailable"? Why I cannot connect?

Hak.5 Radio's server may be down for maintenance or technical problems. Please try to tune in later.

The stream is buffering or cutting out! What's happening?

Buffering is caused by connection problems. It may be a temporary issue with the server or the person streaming, or it may be that your internet connection does not have enough bandwidth for the stream. If buffering continues for a prolonged period, please try stopping other applications and downloads that may be using up your bandwidth.

Frequently Asked Questions for Streamers

I'm interested in streaming. How do I stream?

You will need an application that can stream to an Icecast server, such as SAM Broadcaster, IDJC, Nicecast (Windows, Linux and Mac respectively) or WinAmp with SAM plugin. Once you install the application, import the content of your stream into the application's playlist/library. (Feel free to grab a bumper, see FAQ)

Once the application is correctly configured with your content, tell the application to connect to "hak5radio.com:8000" (no quotes), password: "communitylive" (no quotes) and the mount point being "/listen.mp3" (no quotes). Please set the station name and description to "Hak.5 Radio w/ YourName". We recommend that you use an mp3 codec and a minimum of 128k bitrate.

You may use the web-based request system. To ask for a DJ login for the administration panel, please go on IRC and ask either The_PHP_Jedi, TomB or mubix. (Currently unavailable until new website is up and running)

If you experience problems connecting to the server, it may be in use. If you continue having issues, please join the IRC channel and we will be glad to help.

I don't have the 128k bit-rate option! What do I do?

Many streamers experience this problem. To solve it, install the LAME ACM Codec (different from the LAME encoder!) from http://free-codecs.com/download/LAME_ACM_Codec.htm (safe site afaik), and in most cases you'll need to reboot your system. The higher bit-rates should appear in the configuration options. If you're still having problems, pass by the IRC channel and we'll be glad to help.

I'm a regular DJ. How do I get my regular DJ status?

Please go on IRC and speak with The_PHP_Jedi. You may add yourself to the regular DJs list or he'll do it for you. A regular DJ is seen as someone who streams at least twice a week.

I'm a regular DJ. How can I use the Request System Admin area?

To access the Admin panel, go to http://tombell.org.uk/radio/admin/. If you do not have an account, please contact The_PHP_Jedi, TomB or mubix on IRC. (Currently unavailable until new website is up and running)

How To Use Admin Panel

(Currently unavailable until new website is up and running)

To use the Request System Admin area, log-in with your credentials at http://tombell.org.uk/radio/admin/.

If you are DJing at the moment, click on "Activate" beside "Set Current DJ". This will change the name that appears on the home page of the Request System and allow you to confirm requested songs. To change your music list, click on "Change Music List" and enter the new URL to your music list. To change your password, choose "Change Password".

To enable/disable user requests, click on "enable" or "disable" beside "Requests". To confirm that you will play a specific request, click on "confirm" beside it. To delete a request, click on "remove". Only remove a request when the song is not in your library, is a duplicate, spam or you have just played it.

The request list is updated using AJAX on both the admin and front page, so there is no need to refresh.

Please report spam to The_PHP_Jedi or TomB. If you have any doubts, go on IRC and we'll be glad to help.

Are bumps/bumpers/promos/station ids available?

Of course! We got a few made by the community, but if you think you can make one too, go ahead. Show it in the IRC channel and if we approve, we'll host it and add it to this list!

A Nicecast Setup

http://benmcredmond.com/~ben/forhak5/radio/nicecastsetup.fxpatch - Effects patch for talkshow style setup which allows you to play music and skype individually, play music while mantaning your connection with skype, all stuff SAM can do on windows.

To use it select your music source as something your not using (on the main nicecast window), you then in the effects pain bring up the two application mixers and your voiceover. It will also put levels in your menu bar while streaming. If you wish to have only music click hijack on itunes and make sure that skype isn't hijacked, now your itunes music will be streamed. If you wish to talk over the music put on your voice over (make sure that it's not on if you enable skype). By clicking "monitor output" you can turn on or off the relay of audio from itunes back to you, you can turn it off during a break so you can still talk on skype. If you wish to enable skype just click hijack make sure that your VOICE OVER is not on.

Traktor DJ Studio 3 Tutorial (Windows App Only)

Since Traktor only is able to stream in OGG Vorbis format, we have to convert it first, before sending it to the Hak.5 Radio server.

1. Open Traktor DJ Studio 3 and go to 'File'->'Preferences'->'Broadcasting' and set it up like this:

Image:Traktor1.png

2. Download and install the Icecast2 server from http://www.icecast.org/download.php. Start the server program and start up the server. We will just use the default settings.

3. Download and install Stream Transcoder V3 from http://www.oddsock.org/tools/streamTranscoderV3/. Also download LAME from here: http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php - Open up the zip archive, and place the file lame_enc.dll in your Stream Transcoder folder.

4. Open up Stream Transcoder and start by changing the source address in the top field to 'http://localhost:8000/listen.ogg'. Set the number of encoders to 1, and then double click on the new line saying 'Disconnected', and change the following:

  • ServerPassword=communitylive
  • ServerMountpoint=/listen.mp3
  • ServerStreamURL=http://hak5radio.com/
  • ServerName=Hak.5 Radio w/ Your Nick
  • ServerDescription=Hak.5 Radio w/ Your Nick
  • ServerGenre=Various
  • Encode=MP3

You also have the option of fine tuning the sound quality you want to broadcast with, if you want to do so.

5. When you are done you simply have to start the Icecast2 server, by pressing 'Start Server', and then start Stream Transcoder by pressing 'Connect', and then you are ready to broadcast from Traktor by pressing the broadcast button with the antenna icon:

Image:Traktor2.png

You are now broadcasting to all of Hak.5 Radio's listers.
