Just kidding ^_^

WHY BBS's WERE COOL

For those who either don't remember the days of the BBS or were either too young or had missed it altogether, Bulletin Board Systems can best be thought of in todays terms as a forum site with optional downloads and the occasional game. You connected via a phone line and modem , logged in then proceeded to have fun using text commands. Why do this ? Primarly it was a question of cost. The internet wasn't always as affordable as it was today and all you needed to connect to a BBS was a modem (reasonably cheap) and a computer capable of running a terminal program (pretty much anything with anything more than 4K of memory lying around). You could chat , leave messages or play the many variety of games and MUDS avaliable. Each BBS was different , catering to different tastes and audiences - often times I had no idea what to expect when ringing into a new BBS !

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE (yes mods you can delete this)

For much of a year or two in the early 90's BBS were pretty much my only way of traversing cyberspace. Internet in NZ was still frightfully expensive in those days (for me anyway). Every week or so I would download a new BBS list for my local area (Waikato) then I would proceed to sort through the list according to hours the BBS was open , if they were or were not in my local calling area and interest. The hours were most important for me since not every BBS operated all hours - I often had to check by ringing their number manually and listening for a modem tone. Also I had been stung with a large phone bill for calls made to BBS's outside my local calling area ;(.

WHY HAK5's BBS WILL BE COOL

Because it's run by the hak5 crew obviously ! Some of the MUD games are really cool to play and you can even connect to other telnet BBSs via it. It's like a muesem - come experience cyberspace how it used to be played ...way back before you were born ;)
